I’d listened to Rite of Spring many times but never realized how different and powerful it must have seemed back in 1913 until I saw it performed with original choreography by the Joffrey Ballet alongside Debussy’s Afternoon of a Faun. Incredible juxtaposition !
I think that Le Sacre du Printemps is one of the few mind-bending experiences: including the Fifth Symphony by Beethoven, the 29 piano Sonata, the late piano sonatas by Scriabin, and the third string quartet by Bartok. one has to listen to it almost afresh each time one hears it.
Nicely captures the confusion and sensation of the premiere, not only for the music but for the choreography as well.
I am trying to capture a novel about the early modern and all of its flavors, I do not know if I am succeeding but that is my objective.
